|It seems useful to me if the user could before the actual installation process
configure something like you know it from "make menuconfig" for linux.
This could be:
which of the pliant applications
maybe unpacking the tar-ball (or perhaps this's too much service)
many more, some interactively, some automatically like in configure/autoconf
You currently have some shell scripts and pliant.c which can't do such things.
You could write (b)ash scripts or makefiles for this.
But why the need for expertise in pliant AND ash or make if pliant is
mentioned especially for configure scripts and if you already are familiar
of writing and thinking(!) in pliant?
And if you later have a fullpliant system you have to manage a pliant equivalent
of the script/makefile AND the script/makefile! That would be stress and error-
Note that this is similar to Gordon Matzigkeit's retargetable pliant/cross
compiler. But I think what I am thinking of is different. Just a simple,
small core of pliant, that can be as system-dependent as neccessary.

The reason of such tools is that a C compiler is stupid, or blind as you
prefer: it simply can't check it's environment.
Pliant as no such constrain, so decisions will be taken on the fly.

|I agree with you on that, both for the limits of C's environment checking
and on pliant's cleverness on that.
My conclusion on this is to use this power of pliant.
And to be pragmatic we could start with a very small step.
Maybe parts of the install script done in pliant. The special thing
about my suggestion is that the user does not need to have any pliant installed,
but nontheless we can install pliant with pliant itself.
And we would benefit from install scripts in pliant. We can better read the
logic with is in them and can better ut some logic (that we have in mind) in the
script. This would bring more power and elegance.
